Pearl Alcock, Celebration of the Night, 1987.
Alcock’s artwork was chosen for the Friday of the Manchester Pride weekend. As part of the Windrush generation, Alcock came from Jamaica in 1959. First the artist settled in Leeds and then moved to Brixton in London. This video gives a highlight of her story.
Gillian Wearing & Wolfgang Tillmans
Gillian Wearing’s The Garden and Wolfgang Tillmans Friends Outside Planet have been chosen for the Saturday of Manchester Pride because of their outside theme. Given what is going on in the world at the moment with COVID, we thought these two works would be ideal to give a queer reading of them.
David Hockney, Peter Schlesinger, 1967 & Howard Hodgkin, David’s Pool at Night, 1979.
For the Sunday of Manchester Pride we have chosen to highlight the work of David Hockney and Howard Hodgkin. Both artists became friends in the 1960’s as they started to emerge on the art scene. This video highlights their work and their friendship.
Michael Clarke, The Gardener (Portrait of Derek Jarman), 1994 & General Idea, AIDS, 1989.
For the Monday of Manchester Pride we have chosen two works because of their relevance to AIDS activism. Michael Clarkes The Gardener (Portrait of Derek Jarman and General Idea’s AIDS wallpaper are both relevant to this topic.
