Radical Possibilities: Art & Queer Identity

Queering the Whitworth was pleased to be asked to feature in the Zine, Radical Possibilities: Art & Queer Identity created by Made by Women Zines. Laura Moseley who creates the Zine travelled to Manchester las year – during that period in September of 2020 when the Whitworth was open for six weeks during Lockdown 1.0 and Lockdown 2.0.

Laura and I went on a queer tour of the gallery, we both engaged in a deep conversation on queer art history, LGBTQIA+ representation within the museum, the omission of queer biographies by art history and the museum, amongst many other topics.

Laura wrote in the Zine about our conversation that ‘whilst biography and art historical context aren’t the only tools for understanding a work of art, asserting difference through a revised version of art history, with a multitude of voices and perspectives, is enriching and empowering. However, despite art historians in the North of England leading the way in museum collections for years, we still have a long way to go in undoing the erasure of queer people in art history’.

A picture of the Zine is displayed called, Radical Possibilities: Art & Queer Identity – Open to show a photo of the Whitworth Art Gallery on the left hand side with writing on the right hand side, Queering the Whitworth: Queer Art history in the Museum.
